Angry Video Game Nerd: BOARD JAMES – DREAM PHONE Horror/Comedy Review

By Geno McGahee

I have been a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd for a while. James Rolfe is the character but he has branched out into “Board James”, where he and his buddies talk about their favorite board games in a very amusing way. The latest entry in this series is “Dream Phone,” which is just funny to begin with. We have James and his two pals, Mike (Mike Matei) and Bad Luck Bootsy (Bootsy Spankins), playing the game Dream Phone, where they have to uncover just which teenage boy has a crush on them. It’s hilarious. When they begin playing and the terrible theme for the game is playing, it’s very funny. The reactions of the three make it all that much funnier.

When the game is over, Mike and Bootsy go home, but the phone begins to ring and we have a SCREAM-inspired horror/comedy short, where James is being harassed by a voice on the other line. I did think it was funny when he suspected Mr. Bucket…a game from another horror/comedy short that they did…which I will most likely review in the near future.

At one point James begins to suspect Bootsy as the voice and when he thinks of him, he pictures his face on one of the Dream Phone cards. For some reason, I found that the funniest moment of the entire short. Sadly, Bootsy has a terrible fate and is found in the closet, dead, prompting both James and Mike to say “oh well, he’s dead.”

The ending comes down to a battle between James and the hot pink dream phone and there are no winners. Poor James goes crazy at the end…which was just icing on the cake here.

BOARD JAMES – DREAM PHONE is hilarious. I love most of James Rolfe’s productions and this is no exception. I highly recommend checking this out if you haven’t already.
