Packy’s World: Al Jolson, Boxing, Floyd Mayweather, JR Next Opponent Leaked, & The Chutzpah Award
By Packy “Boom Boom” Goldstein
Oy Vay are you going to hear it today…. The weather here is beautiful on Key Biscayne this afternoon as I write my column. The women are in their short bikinis and in my day, you would get a ticket for what they wear today on the beach. But hey, if my bagels still worked, and I was single, I would be on them like butter to matzo. Oy Vay.
Al Jolson…. Are any of my readers fans of ole Jolie? How I love to play his CD’s to this day. The late great actor, Larry Parks played him in the 1946 movie The Jolson Story and the sequel in 1949, called Jolson Sings Again. Parks was at his very best and they actually used Jolson singing for the movie, which made it that much better. If you have not seen these film classics of a time in our country that was so different, you must watch them soon.
Boxing… For years, Bradley’s father Alvin would get asked, is boxing dead? He would always reply with a huge NO! Today, the question is still around. No, boxing is not dead and I am glad with my few remaining years left on earth, they finally brought it back to regular network TV.
Floyd Mayweather, JR… I have belonged to a boxing club for 40 years on Miami Beach where we meet once a week for lunch and watch old fight tapes of a lot of pals who sadly, are no longer with us. Alvin started the group in 1975, when a lot of the old warriors were in their late 40’s or older that we would watch fight many times over the years. Our Treasurer of our group has a good friend in Las Vegas who is around the Mayweather folks on a regular basis so he claims. He said, two days ago, that Mayweather’s 49th opponent is going to be Keith Thurman. If this is in fact true, I am posting my prediction right now. Tough fight for Floyd over the first 4 rounds, but he makes the adjustments and boxes Thurman’s ears off for the second half of the fight, even dropping him once and taking a 117-111 decision. I did read where Mayweather Promotions requested a date to put on a PPV for September 15th, at the MGM Grand, so the timing is right for an announcement of said name opponent.
The Chutzpah Award…. Today the award goes to Bill Maher of Real Time With Bill Maher. Love him, hate him or something in the middle, the guy has a huge set of bagels on him which he displays weekly on his HBO show. He is not afraid to speak his mind and in so many ways, with him being vocal and his quick wit, he reminds of my dear friend Alvin.
