Georges St. Pierre Hints at Fighting Michael Bisping – MMA News
The former undisputed welterweight champion may end his self-imposed hiatus for a shot at the middleweight title. The current middleweight champion Michael Bisping said in an interview that the UFC superstar’s camp contacted him saying they are very interested in the fight.
“I actually had some people reach out to me and say ‘Georges St-Pierre is interested in fighting you’,” Bisping said on Fox Sport’s Jay and Dan. “Yes, some people from his camp. I was like ‘Really, wow. Okay.” “Tell him to sign the dotted line, just like (what I said about Dan) Henderson, if he really wants to come out of retirement.” Bisping said.
Bisping just came out a scintillating performance against Luke Rockhold who relinquished his title to Bisping via impressive TKO after 10 years and 26 fights in the UFC. Bisping also expressed that he wants to avenge his violent loss to UFC legend Dan Henderson and that would create more hype and attention. As to St.Pierre’s invitation, Bisping is also willing to get the fight done, St.Pierre is a bonafide pay-per-view superstar, a match that can be billed as UK versus Canada, Bisping sees the monetary gain with said matchup.
St.Pierre on the other hand suddenly retired from the fight game after keeping his title in a controversial match against Johny Hendricks. St.Pierre blamed the PED usage and lax in drug testing procedures in the UFC at the time as factors for leaving. St. Pierre also cites the current Reebok exclusive contract with the UFC to be the fight apparel sponsor as another factor that kept him in the sidelines.
In the past few months though, St. Pierre has hinted on a comeback for money fights against big name opponents such as Conor McGregor and Anderson Silva, however Bisping’s current resurgence has St. Pierre shifting his focus on the Brit.
Time will tell whether these two will ever face but if the UFC sees the potential in these showcase matchups, it would undoubtedly stir the conversation as to whether or not UFC should focus more on title defenses or money fights.
