First Lady Betty Ford and Founder of the BETTY FORD CLINIC Dead at 93: AMERICA REMEMBERS
Former First Lady Betty Ford passed away Friday at the age of 93. Known around the world as the founder of the Betty Ford Clinic that treated many over the years for alcoholism and addiction was lauded as a woman of great dignity and compassion. Ford, never one to shy away from women’s issues, was remembered for being unafraid to speak out about social issues, at a time when politicians’ spouses were usually seen, but not heard.
Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said “”When she became First Lady, our country was talking about the burning of bras and equal rights amendments and the need for sexual liberation, and here was a Republican First Lady who seemed quite fine with a lot of that feminist energy of being ginned up largely from the Democratic left.”
RSR sends our condolences to the Ford family in their time of grief.
