Now the Boxing Main Event: Carson Jones Speaks to RSR

Exclusive Interview by Marc Anthony

“Anybody who is in front of me is just another victim.” – Carson Jones

Carson Jones, 38-8-2, 22 KO’s, last fought on enemy territory in the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz undercard. The story goes that he was called in as a last minute replacement to fight Said Ouali, a Mayweather fighter, brought in to give Said another victory. Jones went in focused, ready and determined to not let his momentum stop.

The fight was a showcase on how brutal but artful boxing can be. There were ebbs and flows and the ever changing momentum shift for the whole world to witness, Carson came out victorious with a TKO stoppage in the 7th round. Unfortunately, this fight went under the radar, mainly because of the Mayweather-Ortiz finality.

This time Carson is the main event. He put in his time, blood, sweat and tears into boxing. He will be fighting 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Ricardo Williams on December 15th, at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

MA: 2011 has been a busy year but it paid off. You’re highly ranked as high as 5th in the world. What fighter interests you to test your skills?

A world title shot, that’s who I want. We are actually looking at Hector Saldivia, after I beat Ricardo Williams, as a title eliminator. Then the winner of me and Saldivia will be the mandatory for the IBF welterweight title

MA: Does sparring ever go full blast?

Sparring is more so for working on different stuff. I got a good sparring partner right now. He is actually better than my next opponent …I think. So, he is good, he is slick. We are working on some different stuff. He is a good fighter. Sparring is more about work not trying to kill each other.

MA: Who is your sparring partner?

He is good prospect, not saying any names, but he is definitely going make some noise when he starts getting his career on the road.

MA: Your recent win against Said, how satisfying was it?

It was pretty satisfying. I wish I could have gotten a stoppage by knockout instead of by TKO. There a few things I would have done differently. But of course a win is a win. I got the TKO win in Vegas. So, I am satisfied, but I wish I did it in a more devastating and dramatic fashion.

MA: After the first round, you came out throwing heavy. What made you decide to go after it so hard on the second?

The body was right there. Said thought he could sit and bang with me and that was a big mistake. By the time he realized he couldn’t do that…it was too late. He was wide open for the body the whole fight. The body and the uppercuts all night long and I took advantage of it.

MA: After that round both of you talked to each other. What did you say to him?

I would repeat what I had said (pause) but it was some violent words exchanged.

MA: In the 5th round, around the halfway mark, Ouali seemed to have hit you with a nice shot, were you hurt?

It’s a boxing match you are going to get hit once or twice. I wasn’t hurt to the point where I was dazed. He got me with a good shot and I recovered fast.

MA: Sixth and seventh rounds you went to work and had him busted up. What was going through your mind before it was announced the fight was stopped?

I was working him in the sixth round and the seventh round was even better. I knew as soon as I saw his eyes and as soon as he didn’t get off the stool, the referee was talking to him earlier, that something was about to happen. I was pretty sure they were going to stop it. It was either I was going to get the knockout or they were going to stop it. But I was happy with the stoppage.

MA: How do you fit into the championship picture?

Mike Jones defeated Sebastian Lujan and will fight Randal Bailey for the vacant title. I am rated five right now after this month. I should be rated number four. The guy over me is Hector Saldivia. The IBF is going to award a fight between me and Hector Saldivia for the number one mandatory spot. Whoever wins that will fight the winner of Mike Jones and Randal Bailey, which will be the IBF champion.

I am within two fights of a world title shot.

MA: Added pressure?

I am on a mission ever since I moved to 147. I am taking on whoever I have to…to get to reach my goal. Anybody who is in front of me is just another victim. I look at them like I am fighting Mike Tyson and I got to go out there and do my best.

MA: In past fights you have added a bit of flashiness. Is it part of entertainment for the fans or something you do when you get on your groove?

It’s just something that happens. You can say I have matured as a fighter. My style now is straight forward and backing my opponent down. That was more so in my younger days.

MA: Can your fans expect an early Christmas gift Dec 15th 2011 against Ricardo Williams?

They can definitely expect an early Christmas gift. First of all it’s going to be an early Christmas gift for me. I am predicting Ricardo Williams won’t last 10 rounds.
