Dereck Chisora Vs David Haye: BRITISH BOXING WAR

By Donald C. Stewart

Turn up and we’ll take away your livelihood. As the rest of the Boxing fraternity sit and shake their heads at the decision taken by Frank Warren to sanction the David Haye – Dereck Chisora bout in England by using the Luxembourg Board of Control, the British Board of Boxing Control have come out clear and unequivocal. From their statement, “”Those behind the proposal are not concerned with the interests of the sport of professional boxing. Any member who participates in such a promotion would bring the sport of boxing into disrepute and would wholly undermine the authority of the British Boxing Board of Control, of which he/she is a member, as the regulatory body for professional boxing in the United Kingdom. This is nothing more than an attempt to circumvent the decision of the stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control, in respect of Dereck Chisora, for monetary gain. Dereck Chisora’s proper remedy is by way of appealing to the Independent Stewards of Appeal, which is due to take place on July 2, 2012. Participation includes taking any steps directly or indirectly, to arrange, advertise, broadcast, facilitate, officiate or take part in any way in such a promotion.”

Box Nation – the new broadcaster in the UK dedicated to boxing has scheduled the fight and there are many “names” associated with this. Do we hear the sound of a cancellation coming?

Unfortunately the Board’s decision to issue a ban rather than a suspension may have lead to this bizarre set of circumstances so before they go off and find a high horse on which to sit, they have to share the blame and look at how they handled things. Haye won’t mind and for Chisora it merely tests his current currency in the market… Watch this space…
