Carlos Molina – Cory Spinks BOXING RESULTS – ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights Decision

By Geno McGahee

Carlos Molina, 21-5-2, 6 KO’s, struggled with the former welterweight champion, Cory Spinks, 39-8, 11 KO’s, falling into many clinches and not finding the punches that he had hoped for. Molina pressed the action, but the hometown crowd may have had him off his game as he lunged in and allowed Spinks to survive.

The pressure from Molina would take its toll on Spinks and eventually put him on the floor twice, but it would go to the cards without much drama. Molina won easily by scores of 119-106 (twice) and 120-105. Molina has now put himself in line for a title shot.

Antwone Smith, 23-4-1, 12 KO’s, easily outpointed former champion Jose Luis Castillo, 64-12-1, 55 KO’s, over the course of 10 rounds, leading to the wide unanimous decision wins by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92. Castillo is totally shot and couldn’t pull the trigger. He tried to use his old bag of tricks, digging to the body of the younger fighter, but he couldn’t sustain anything significant. It was a decent win for Smith.
