Sergio Martinez Defeats Martin Murray: CLOSE FIGHT & UNEXPECTED WAR – Boxing News

By Geno McGahee

In a tougher than expected fight, Sergio Martinez, 51-2-2, 28 KO’s, eked by Martin Murray, 25-1-1, 11 KO’s, with a decision win by the scores of 115-112 across the board. Father time may have caught up with Martinez. He looked flat and wasn’t able to land his punches with any regularity. Murray fought evenly and even dropped Martinez from a right hand and he arguably knocked him down a second time from another right hand that wasn’t called.

With the time off, age, and tough and emotional fight with Julio Cesar Chavez, JR., in his last fight, Martinez may not be the same guy that he was before that fight. There was nothing to suggest that he was an elite fighter in this victory. This could easily have been a draw or a victory for Murray.

At 38, Martinez doesn’t have much time left in the sport and should look to land another big showdown before he loses, which, after seeing this, may be right around the corner.
