Canelo Alvarez Vs Floyd Mayweather JR: Money Talks – Superfight Signed – BOXING NEWS

By Geno McGahee

I am in complete shock that the fight is going to happen between undefeated pound for pound champion, Floyd Mayweather, JR., 44-0, 26 KO’s, and Mexican superstar, Canelo Alvarez, 42-0-1, 30 KO’s. The two will meet in Las Vegas on September 14th in what is surely going to be one of the highest selling pay per views in recent history, if not of all time.

It has been noted that Floyd will be taking home a 50 million dollar purse for this fight, as Canelo will settle for 10 million or so, but even though the money is a big factor here, there is another motivator for Floyd. Recently, it appeared that Floyd was doing everything he could do dismiss Canelo as a future opponent and names like Amir Khan and Devon Alexander were thrown around as his next opponents, but the people weren’t having any of it. Neither man presented a real challenge for him and the public knew it and so did Showtime, I’m sure. It is reported that the network lost 12 million dollars on the Robert Guerrero PPV and they want to stay in business. An Alvarez fight is a guaranteed money-maker.

This will be the first undefeated foe for Floyd since his 2007 destruction of Ricky Hatton, a fighter that brought in a record of 43-0, but he isn’t the beast that Alvarez is. For years, a Mayweather JR – Manny Pacquiao fight has been pushed by the public and teased by the promoters but has never happened and this fight is bigger than that. There has to be a lot of credit to Mayweather, JR., for finally listening to the people and removing the obstacles to make the fight that the fans want happen.

This fight will be taking place at light middleweight with the contracted weight being 152 pounds, a slight compromise but not a deal-breaker. Floyd has fought at light middleweight before when he defeated Miguel Cotto in 2012, and he had a hard time with the strength. That has to be on the minds of team Alvarez as they prepare for this fight. Floyd is very strong, stronger than he is given credit for, but he will be entering the ring as the smaller man in this fight.

The closest that Floyd has come to fighting a guy like Alvarez has to be Cotto. Cotto is a big, powerful, skilled aggressor that is able to think on his feet and used his superior strength to really be in that fight. He lost by a wide margin on the cards, but the fight seemed closer to those that watched it.

Oscar De La Hoya, at his advanced age, was able to use his tactics to perform well with Floyd and even noted before the Guerrero fight that the jab is the key. Cotto proved that. When he jabbed, he busted up Floyd. Canelo has a good jab when he chooses to use it and it should be interesting to see how Floyd reacts. Floyd is the master in the ring and knows how to adjust. He will adjust and we’ll see how Canelo copes and re-adjusts.

On September 14th, the two biggest names in boxing will collide in what will be the biggest pay per view of the year, easily. It’s a rarity to get two undefeated pound for pound best fighters in the ring in a fight that could go either way. Can Floyd deal with the power of Canelo? Can Canelo bring Floyd out of his game and use his body work and strength to upset the Money man? For those of you that have said that boxing has lost the big fights. Well, this proves that the sport has something left. If you only see one fight in 2013, make it this one. Anything can and probably will happen.
