Ivan Calderon in the Big Apple
One of the best boxers in the world, Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon, the WBO 108 pound world champion, is ready to take another bite of the big apple on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. Calderon, a two time world champion, will take on Jesus “Azul” Iribe of Mexico in the main event of “Top Rank Live” this Saturday night in the Theater at Madison Square Garden in a fight that will be televised by Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports en Español and on Pay-per-view in Puerto Rico. Calderon arrived on Friday Night in New York.
He visited the ESPN Campus in Bristol, Connecticut that night, and Saturday night was at ringside to see his good and long time friend Miguel Cotto, become a three time world champion in Yankee Stadium. On Sunday, his day off, Calderon walked the streets of Manhattan with his team, Jose “Che Che” Sanchez and Angel Cotto. This Monday he will return to his routine of running in the morning and training in the afternoon.
Last year also on the eve of the Puerto Rican Parade, Calderon fought in the co-main event of the Cotto-Clottey bout and ended with a technical draw against the current WBC 108 pound champion Rodel Mayol in a fight held in the main arena of the Garden.
“I wasn’t happy with what happened in New York last year and I hope to give the fans a better fight this time around. I feel really well and had a good training camp for this fight,” Calderon said.
Calderon will hold a media workout this Wednesday in Kingsway Gym, on Thursday the final press conference will be at Expo in Madison Square Garden, the weigh-in will be Friday at the Peyton room at the Affinia Hotel.
“I don’t know much about Iribe other than he has fought twice for a world championship, but I am sure that like all Mexican fighters, he will come forward and will make me work hard for the victory,” Calderon said. Calderon was the WBO 105 pound champion before jumping to 108 and taking the title away from Hugo Cazares back in august of 2007 in Puerto Rico.
