On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800 was blown out of the sky, just 12 minutes after take-off. All 230 people on board were killed, making the disaster the third-deadliest aviation accident to occur in U.S. territory.
On August 23, 2000, a 4-year investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that the most probable cause of the accident was an explosion in one of the plane’s fuel tanks, the likely result of a short circuit.
