Geno’s Boxing Corner: Mel Gibson, Brock Lesnar & the Manny Pacquiao – Floyd Mayweather JR Truth

By Geno McGahee

I haven’t written one of these in quite a while, but I felt it was due, and although it’s called “Geno’s Boxing Corner,” I cannot stick exclusively to the sport we all love. Mel Gibson must be addressed.

I am a big fan of Gibson’s work. His dramatic overacting in RANSOM still amazes me and his sexual harassment of police officers may be wrong, but I found the term “Sugar T**s” amusing.

Anyone that uses that term cannot be all right. I never saw THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and I don’t really have any desire to. I’m not a fan of religious movies. The only religious movie that I seem to enjoy was SIGNS, another Gibson movie where he plays a Reverend that loses his faith when his wife dies only to have it restored when aliens invade. The most recent movie that Gibson starred in was EDGE OF DARKNESS, a film that was shot in Massachusetts. I remember the press release that was sent out to the hopeful extras in the movie: “Do not speak to Mr. Gibson. Do not look upset. Always smile.” What? How can you smile when he’s calling you “sugar t**s?”

Bad news seems to follow Gibson around, mostly stemming from his drunken racist comments, but now it has apparently escalated. His ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, reportedly has two of her front teeth punched out by her Lethal Weapon hubby and to prove the abuse, she taped his tirade, which wasn’t pretty. He allegedly said:

“’You’re an embarrassment to me. You look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n******(racial slur), it will be your fault.”

I think that the cat has been out of the bag on Gibson for some time. He is a racist, although I think that he may have said some things in the heat of the battle while half in the bag and may not have truly meant them. If he beat the hell out of her, which seems to be the case, there is no real excuse for that. She is correct to get a restraining order against him and pursue it criminally.

A good thing may come out of this. Hopefully the writers at LAW & ORDER will write another episode about him. Remember when Chevy Chase played a Gibson-like star, going as far as to call a female cop “sugar t**s?” It’s one of my favorite episodes.

Even though our society tends to label people guilty until proven innocent, I hope that we can all not pass judgment on him. Remember, he was cleared of all previous charges. He may only be guilty of being a drunken potty mouth.

Brock Lesnar…the Next Big Thing

I remember when Brock Lesnar was “the next big thing,” in wrestling, but after watching the attention that his UFC Title defense got last weekend, I think it’s fair to say that he’s one of the biggest names in sports. I watched his bout with Shane Carwin and I was excited to see it and I’m not an MMA fan. I haven’t really watched much of it since the infancy of the UFC tournament when they used to have heavyweights battling lightweights…it was insane. I watched Kimbo Slice fight a few times…I’m probably the sort of fan that real MMA fans despise. Brock may not be the best fighter in the world, but his strength and the high knockout record of Carwin coupled with the great marketing of the fight made it a must see.

Overall, it was exciting. Carwin struck first with a left uppercut that rattled Lesnar, but he kept his cool and came back and made a tired Carwin tap out. Without the hype, it wouldn’t have been as exciting, but the UFC and MMA as a whole is more fan friendly than boxing. They know how to sell a fight…something that Don King used to do so well. He told the story and created some of the greatest matches in history.

Boxing could learn from the UFC.
