RSR Boxing Results: Juan Manuel Lopez & Nonito Donaire Score Knockouts on Showtime

By Geno McGahee

Nonito Donaire, 24-1, 16 KO’s, used his reach to keep the much shorter Herman Marquez, 27-2, 20 KO’s, at bay and punish him over the course of the seven rounds before stopping him in the eighth round. Donaire began with the southpaw stance and settled with orthodox to eventually stop the challenge of Marquez and pick up the Interim WBA Super Flyweight Title.

Marquez was game and his punches were short but he could never get on the inside to do damage on Donaire. A left uppercut in the 8th round put Marquez on the floor and when he arose, his corner instructed the referee to end the fight, giving the Filipino superstar a good win.

In the main event, WBO Featherweight Champion, Juan Manuel Lopez, 29-0, 26 KO’s, began the night early, battering challenger Bernabe Concepcion, 28-4-1, 15 KO’s, and dropping him in the first round. Lopez would continue to beat his opponent until he, himself, ran into a left hook that put him on the floor. He got up and the round ended.

In the second round, the two came out warring again, but Lopez would land a straight left hand that would send Concepcion down again. He would arise and stun Lopez, only to have Lopez strike back and knock him down again. Unable to continue, Concepcion would suffer the first knockout defeat of his career in the 2nd round and Lopez moves on as one of the budding stars in boxing. There are still questions but his punch and great track record thus far is establishing him as a star.
