RSR Book Review: The Devil Made Me Do It – A Memoir by Georgina Spelvin
Recently I interviewed Adult Movie Screen Legend, Georgina Spelvin, about her movie career, fondness for the sport of boxing, and her 2008 memoir “The Devil Made Me Do It”. In my lead-in, I mentioned that the book presented a lot for the reader. It is funny and very poignant, especially when she talks about her Mother. A tome that clearly reads: “I had one helluva a roller coaster ride with all of its ups and down, but I am still standing.”
In her book, you get a look into the adult movie industry when it really came into its own during a time when you had ridiculous laws concerning sex. If you want to see how ridiculous, just watch the recent documentary that is now out in theaters called “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel”. I saw it last night with Valarie and it was fantastic.
Spelvin’s book shows a loyalty to her friends in the industry and the bumpy road along the way. She honestly talks about her alcoholism and the path to finally getting it up against the ropes and dropping it for a ten count.
Today, she has found happiness with her husband, John Welsh, an actor and writer in his own regard who she closes the book out talking about. This is a very well-written book and the thing I love most about it, is for those out there who would stereotype and many do, would think a Porno Star as women in the adult movie industry seem to be called, could not possibly have brains or even know how to write. Well, in 2010, forget your stereotypes because Georgina Spelvin just doesn’t break them, but shatters them into a million pieces.
If you are not into the Adult Movie Industry which there is nothing wrong with that, still pick up this book because it offers so much more to the reader.
