WWE’s Linda McMahon: The Senate Run in Connecticut
Linda McMahon could be the next U.S. Senator out of Connecticut. The former Chief Executive Officer of World Wrestling Entertainment, who recently won the Republican Party primary election, has spent $22 million of her $50 million budget on campaigning to cut her deficit from 40 to only 10 points behind heavy favorite Richard Blumenthal in the latest poll.
Dick Blumenthal, Connecticut’s attorney general of twenty years, was once believed to be untouchable as Chris Dodd’s replacement. McMahon turned the tide against him, criticizing his character by pointing out Blumenthal’s delusiveness in his military record claims and special-interest donation acceptance. She even goes as far as calling Blumenthal’s string of lies a practice and pattern over several years, furthering that the people of Connecticut need their candidates to state the facts.
Speaking of the facts, Linda McMahon provides an ample amount of her own on her campaign website www.Linda2010.com (in fact, this article is based on information gathered from the website, so if politics or Linda McMahon interest you, or if you are a Connecticut resident, check it out). Let’s take a brief look at a condensed version of McMahon’s resume:
Graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in French and a teaching certification
Former CEO of WWE; grew the company from 13 employers to over 500 worldwide and received Legacy of Hope Award
Sacred Heart University Board Member
Member of the Board of Directors of the Close Up Foundation
Involved in The Make-A-Wish Foundation, United Services Organization
Appointed by Governor Rell to serve on the Connecticut Board of Education
McMahon’s website also offers her stances on key issues that surround November’s election. While Linda explains her stances on bigger issues in depth, she also describes where she stands on secondary issues.
Regarding her stance on economic growth and job creation Linda proposes a two-step plan entitled, “Preserving the American Dream: A Plan to Put Connecticut Back to Work,” which would entail reducing tax rates and reducing regulations. This would prevent spending more than you can pay for while keeping inflation low, and simultaneously, keeping the US dollar strong. In short, creating more jobs within the US and maintaining international trade are the bases of this plan.
Linda also believes that the deficit spending must end, and that America needs to practice fiscal discipline (cutting taxes while reducing spending). Linda also believes that the “culture of bailouts must end,” and that healthcare reform must address the rising costs accompanying the plan.
Her stance on national security proves her commitment to our troops, as Linda feels we should keep our troops informed and supported. She also believes that we must continue our defense against terrorism through offensive assault in Afghanistan in order to keep our homeland safe. Bringing our troops home in victory, not defeat, should be the long-term goal.
On abortion, Linda’s stance is best described as circumstantial. McMahon is pro-choice, but she is against partial-birth abortions. She also opposes federal funding of abortions, that is unless the mother’s life is at stake during the delivery. In addition, Linda favors parental notification/consent legislation.
Linda supports legal immigration, capital punishment, legalizing gay marriage, and maintaining second amendment (gun) rights, but when it comes to energy and environment, she opposes cap-and-trade due to Connecticut’s highest electrical bill rates in the Continental US.
This is only skimming the surface of Linda’s campaign, so if you’re interested, please check out her website which is again, www.Linda2010.com for more information.
The United States Senate Election will take place on November 2, 2010 so there is plenty of time to get educated about the issues and politicians involved.
“I do believe that what our country needs today is more people like me, and not people like Dick Blumenthal, who actually said lawsuits create jobs. We need people who understand how to create jobs, and understand the consequences of taxes and regulations when they are placed on businesses. Dick Blumenthal has none of that kind of experience, and in this day and age, I think more is necessary than the typical politicians.”
