A Closer Look at Bernard Hopkins
“For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories.”–Plato
After many years, the so-called experts (who have never laced up a glove) are saying that Bernard Hopkins is too old to be in the ring with his opponent, a man-eating lion. A 2:1 betting favorite for his opponent, many doubted he’d win that night. He’s an aged fighter like Trinidad. Many believed that Trinidad will walk through him. I must confess that I was one of the nay sayers, but he has defied Father Time on many occasions. Many say he’s not human, he’s an alien, he’s a freak. They question how can he compete at that level since he is close to 50 years of age.
How does he do it? Plain and simple, it’s discipline. Discipline may roll off the tongue easily, but self-control is required. We hear of many world champs gaining weight in between bouts. Many fighters enjoy the fast life, frequent strip clubs, and marry fast women. I’m not saying is a bad thing, each person decides how they want to live their life. However, such a lifestyle is not for Bernard Hopkins. He cares deeply about his reputation and his legacy.
I know of his sacrifices first hand. My wife and I had dinner with him and a few of his associates. We noticed his discipline and self-control. It was evident in his choice of food and drink and his personal choices. He drank mineral water; not one drop of alcohol. His eye was simple. He could never be accused of being a “playa”. He was happy and interesting , full of joy. When it was getting late he excused himself to get some rest. Not one time did he say ” let’s go out to party” or “let’s hit the town with gorgeous women.” He was not even a participant in the fights at the time we had dinner, but was simply there as a spectator of the Broner vs Maidana match.
Rather than thinking of him as an alien is or a freak of nature, admire his dedication! His body is his temple. He takes care of it and a wonderful example, not just athletes, but to everyone – political, religious, married, or single. He’s at this level still because of his addiction to the gym and clean living.
Does Kovalev have the brains to beat a master? He certainly has the braun. The question is,can he match his ring intellect? Many think so,evident by the fact that betting odds have Kovalev at a slight favorite. Do they see something we can’t? Some of my close friends believe Hopkins has bitten off more than he can chew. One thing for sure is that his discipline, experience and old school rough tactics will carry him to victory. Can he lose? Sure, there is a huge possibility he can lose. Kovalev is without a doubt the hardest puncher in the division and for Hopkins to take up this challenge is commendable in itself but now he has the great task to rewrite history once more and shock many. I would not be shocked, as I believe the words of Plato-
“For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories. ” Bernard Hopkins has accomplished this.
