Joan Guzman Returns to the Ring on January 22nd

Joan GuzmanFormer two-time world champion Joan Guzman will be back in action January 22. Like his last fight this past October 31, the venue will be the San Jose Fiesta Mexican Restaurant which is owned by Guzman’s manager Ramon Arellano and located in Nashville, Tennessee. The opponent for the main event bout will be determined shortly.

Guzman defeated a veteran journeyman this past October 31 which was met with some criticism in some social media networks. Arellano quickly came to the defense of his fighter and addressed this. “I read some people writing some negative comments and I personally told them that it didn’t matter who he fought. What matters is that he fought, won, got some rounds and came out of the fight injury free. Guzman hadn’t fought in nearly two years prior to this last fight.”

Arellano recently had the Hispanic Entrepreneur of the Year award presented to him by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. This turned out to be significant because there has been outreach within the local community with support for Guzman once word got out that Arellano was managing him. Which in turn has worked out well in his effort to move Guzman properly towards world title contention once again.

Arellano has been offered multiple fights for Guzman against some high profile names and for respectable purses, however, he made it clear that he will not throw his fighter in too soon until he knows he is ready.

“I’m not and never will be a type of manager who is trying to financially live off of my fighter or put my financial needs ahead of his career. I provide for my family just fine on my own. I moved to the U.S. at a young age from my native Mexico and arrived speaking no English. There were tough times but I earned everything that I have today through hard work. Aside from that I used to be a professional fighter so I have seen it all and know what many fighters go through. The last thing I would try and do is take advantage of any fighter.

“At this stage of his career, realistically Guzman and I may only have one chance at this and were doing it the right way. Physically and mentally Guzman is already ready. Just a little fine tuning is needed due to the inactivity. He will be ready for a big fight in 2015 for sure. I hope all those who have been contacting me with those big fight offers on short notice knowing of Guzman’s nearly two year layoff will still be offering in 2015 when he is ready,” concluded Arellano.
