GGG vs AWBy Jimmy Lange

As we rapidly approach the event dubbed “Fight of the Century”, I am a firm believer that when all is said and done on May 2, boxing fans will be disappointed. They will realize that they have just seen a “Fugazi” like the diamond Al Pacino’s character “Lefty”  showed Donnie Brasco, in the great movie Donnie Brasco.

I get it, however. As the two fighters have postured and stalled for 6 years to the point that for many, the fight is stale, most of the casual fans in boxing have been so programmed by the dangling carrot that they will drop the 100 dollars without a second thought.

Which leads me to the Real Mccoy!

So far in this relatively short century marquee matchup is Andre Ward Vs Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. This fight has no downside (granted they fight within the next 12-18 months). While
Mike Tyson was a 1 of a kind fighter, Golovkin is similar in the way that he has taken his division by storm. Golovkin’s dominance has yet to be challenged. Don’t get me wrong, he is not untested, he’s just that good. He obliterates each test in brutal fashion.

So who do we look to as a worthy challenger? Enter, Andre Ward….

This is a dream matchup…a classic killer with power in both hands, a granite jaw, who has blown through every one in his path facing a classic boxer with impeccable skills.

The fight reminds me of another MEGA-FIGHT that took place almost 28 years ago next month, a fight that the public clamored for and two of history’s greatest champions obliged.

On an April night in Las Vegas, Marvelous Marvin Hagler stepped into the ring against Sugar Ray Leonard. What followed was nothing short of magical and it was a fight for the record books. Hagler was virtually unbeatable when he took on the smaller, yet slicker and more polished Leonard. Marvin was favored by the majority of the planet this night. However, it was the Sugar man who fought the perfect tactical fight and emerged with the greatest victory of his storied career.

These two fights have many similarities, the most glaring being the fighters’ respective styles.
One major difference, though, is size. Ward, the more technical of the two, is also the bigger man. This will tell the story in the matchup. Triple G is the more devastating puncher and brawler. Ward is a big super middleweight, if not a light heavyweight.

This will enable him comfort. As we know, boxing is a “hit and don’t be hit” business. Ward will not be hit often, but when Golovkin does land, Ward’s size will play a part in him being able to hold up under a firestorm that a smaller man has not been able to overcome.

So, when all the excitement of May 2, becomes disappointment on May 3, boxing will start to look for another marquee matchup to stop the bleeding. Attention: Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin….Gentlemen, that will be your cue. Incidentally, my pick for that fight is, Andre Ward in a 12 round decision. There will possibly be a few anxious moments, but he will weather GGGs assault and give him a nice lesson in boxing.

In the meantime fight fans, enjoy the hype of the Mayweather, JR. – Pacquiao fight. Let me know how it turns out, because on May 2, I will be watching my man Mickey Rooney in “Killer McCoy”

And for those who believe that, there’s a Bridge in Brooklyn that you may be interested in purchasing..
