Floyd Mayweather, JR FEVER Breaks Out in Las Vegas

FMJBy Roy Bennett (In Las Vegas)

The worldwide media have descended on Las Vegas in the hope that a fight will break out on tonight. But this isn’t just any fight. Anyone worth their salt will have an opinion about the upcoming clash between Floyd Mayweather, JR. and Manny Pacquiao tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Whether the opinion is an informed one backed by sound reasoning or not doesn’t matter anymore. This fight crossed into emotional territory a long time ago. But all of it will fade into insignificance when both boxers meet in center ring tonight for the referee’s instructions.

When the first bell rings the mind will stop and the senses will take over. It is a primal experience. And no one’s opinion will mean a damn thing. The fighters will etch their will on the flesh of one another. When all is said and done their actions will tell the only story that matters.

And it will be told in blood. As civilized and sophisticated as we like to think we are, we still want to see a man punch another man in the face. We’ll pay for the privilege. It is the oldest kind of sporting contest between men. We are drawn to the spectacle and it exerts a primal hold over us. The more things change the more things stay the same. I’m good with it. No other other sport comes close.
