Packy’s World: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin a Modern Day Tony Zale
By Packy “Boom Boom” Goldstein
Oy Vay, are you going to hear it today…. BookFace, Shitter, and Stinked In! What are all these social media things about that “Bad” Brad tells me he is going to put my column on? In my day, Alvin his dad, and I would meet poolside at the Eden Roc on Miami Beach to talk about what we got into the night before and all the happenings in Boxing. We didn’t have computers, cell phones and the rest of this junk they use today. Well, I have to admit, I do have a cell phone because Sadie insists I do. But the rest of them, they can shove up their tuckus if you ask me. And what is with this finger Texting stuff? I see young men finger Texting while eating with hotties all over Miami Beach that I would love to get my fingers on and not a cell phone to finger Text.
Oy Vay if my Sadie wouldn’t kick me twice in the bagels if I tried. A guy can dream can’t he? In my single days, they would be back up to my hotel room quicker than Frank Sinatra sang, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”! Frank owned Miami Beach back in those days and Alvin and I would see him many a night at the Fountainbleu Hotel where Al also worked. So onto the boxing stuff… I feel that Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is a modern day Tony Zale especially after his recent win over slick Willie Monroe, JR. I say this because “GGG” took punches on purpose to give the crowd excitement for their hard earned money. Tony was the same way. Just watch any of his fights especially with Rocky Graziano. Oh wait a second…. Here is a great Alvin Berkwitt story for the RSR readers and it involves Rocky Graziano.
Alvin knew him from Miami Beach and Rocky asked Al to drive with him in his new car from Miami Beach to New York City in the mid 1950’s. Well, Alvin jumped at the chance to ride with his pal, but the funny thing Rocky didn’t know, Al did not have a driver’s license at that time. Shit, years later, when Al did get one, he was not much better of a driver with one!
The stories I can and will tell about my dear friend are priceless. I truly miss him. Zale and “GGG” really care about their fans and it warms my heart to see it. In fact, had they fought, what a war it would have been.
Any predictions folks in who you think would win? I am going to go with Zale, but in an all out war and him winning a 15 round split decision.
