Packy’s World: Floyd Mayweather, JR Hate EMAIL’S, Carmen Basilio, Peter Sellers, My Pal Al & Pat Cooper Awarded The Chutzpah Award

PACKYS-WORLD-500x300By Packy “Boom Boom” Goldstein

Oy Vay are you going to hear it today… It happened. It happened. What happened you ask ole “Boom Boom”? The inspector came today and gave his stamp of approval on Sadie’s kitchen. My little leg of lamb Sadie broke my bagels for a month while this kitchen remodel went on, so to have it finally over, I am more than pleased RSR readers.

PBF PIC (Copy)Floyd Mayweather, JR Hate Mail… Ok let me start like this. Where did you ever see Packy “Boom Boom” Goldstein say he hated Floyd? For the “reading is fundamental crowd” including Floyd, what I did say was this. He is a great fighter, but as a person and his antics outside the ring, I do not condone nor like. So in the words of my buddy Al, “May you be fruitful and multiplied, but not in those words”. Translation: F to the You on your hate emails!

Carmen Basilio… What a tough little SOB he was in his day. Years back, I met him when he faced Italo Scortichini, on January 16, 1954, at the old Dinner Key180px-Basilio.Carmen Auditorium in Miami with Al. He fought Italo to a tough draw in that fight and afterwards, Al and I went to his dressing room. Carmen was a fun guy who loved to play around. I remember him coming over to Al and pretending to pull a quarter from behind his ear. RIP Champ.

Chance_the_GardenerPeter Sellers… I always loved him as a comedian and an actor. Many will say Doctor Strangelove was his finest hour on screen. I will not argue that point. However, in the “Book of Packy”, I think his 1979 starring role in Being There which he was nominated for a Best Oscar and should have won, was his finest hour. If you have not seen this movie, check it out on DVD.

My Pal Al (“Bad” Brad’s Father)… It’s 1976 and Al decides he is going to try and get his acting career off the ground again. He takes Bradley and all their belongings in his 71 yellow VW Bug and drives from Miami to California in 3 days. Every time they stopped, he would call me Person to Person and come up with the funniest names you ever heard to let me know where they were. One time it was Packy Arizona. Another Packy “The Waco Kid”. And another, Packy “The Eagle Has Landed”. There were a few others, but I will keep this column for the most part, PG. I so miss my pal Al.

The Chutzpah Award… The Chutzpah Award goes to legendary Italian comedian Pat Cooper. Bagels? Did you say bagels? Pat had the biggest pair of bagels to do the funny things and stand up Pat Cooperto the folks in the entertainment industry during his amazing career. I have seen him many times over the years and never once, did he not have my on the floor laughing my tukus off.
