Siderski’s Personal Five Favorite Fighters in Boxing Today

DSBy Dave “Mythical” Siderski (Who else would it be by?)

Hi all, I tend to be a retro guy at heart as you can probably see by my first few articles. However, I don’t want to completely ignore the current boxing scene as there are certainly plenty of exciting fighters today as well. That said, I’ll take a minute to tell you the five fighters I most enjoy watching now, along with a few that I’d like to see get off the stage.

#1) Gennady “GGG” Golovkin: To quote the Mickey Goldmill character from Rocky: “This guy is a wrecking machine……..and he’s hungry”! An undefeated record of 33-0, 30 KOs, 13 title defenses, all by stoppage. “GGG”, I love watching you fight and want to see you get the big payday you deserve! Somebody please step up and fight these men. Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Andre Ward, Are you listening? No, B-Hop, I don’t mean you!

#2) Deontay Wilder: Ah, an American Heavyweight that we can really get excited about! He stands an imposing 6’7’’ and has 33 knockouts in 34 victories. Do we finally have a Heavyweight that can challenge the Klitschko dynasty? Deontay, I don’t know exactly how good you are just yet but look forward to finding out.

#3) Andre Ward: Where have you been dude? I loved watching you in the Super Six. Your systematic destruction of Chad Dawson was amazing to watch! I thought he was the heir apparent to Mayweather, JR. as boxing’s next Pound for Pound King. I’m glad Andre has finally returned to the ring and look forward to seeing what he has in store for us next, preferably a showdown with Sergey Kovalev or “GGG”.

#4) Guillermo Rigondeaux: Yes, you’re boring at times but also an outstanding technical fighter with some power. I’m following you with great interest. Guillermo earned my respect when he boxed the ears off of Nonito Donaire, formerly one of my favorite fighters. This potential fight with Lomachenko has possibilities.

#5) Miguel Cotto: Miguel Cotto I have to give it up to you. You’ve won some and lost some, but always performed honorably against the best of your era. That’s all we can ask of a great fighter. In the end, he’s a four division world champ and still relevant at the age of 34. Now, step up and fight “GGG” damn it!

Please Exit Stage Left….

Floyd Mayweather, JR. and Manny Pacquiao: Guys, you have my utmost respect and you belong on a very short list of the greatest fighters ever. That said, I really don’t want to see a rematch. Floyd, unless, it’s a match with “GGG”, I’m not interested. Manny, time to hang it up period! Nothing more to prove for either of you.

Bernard Hopkins: B’Hop, you are a true legend and the fighter I most admire in boxing over the past 25 years. I’ve enjoyed watching you defy history and age limitations. That said, the beating you took against Kovalev concerns me. You have everything to lose and nothing to gain by going on. Same goes for you Roy Jones, JR. Guys, I’d rather hear your insightful commentary on HBO!
Adrien Broner: Until you can back up your bravado with your performance in the ring, I’m not particularly interested in seeing more of you either. No interest in seeing you fight against Mayweather, JR.

Ok, that’s it. To quote my great-grandmother “Bessie L. Cook”, “Them’s my sentiments”! Bessie died when I was very young so I never knew her personally but have gotten to know her through her poetry, an historical gem and great read which I’m privileged to be in possession of now.
