Earnie Supporter

Gene “The Boxing Machine” from Canada you asked for it and you will get your wish as our next mythical matchup features two hard punching Heavyweights who never captured the title. Earnie “The Acorn” Shavers squares off against Donavan “Razor” Ruddock.

Shavers was one of the hardest punchers in Heavyweight history, scoring 68 knockouts in 74 victories. Included among his 24 first round victims were Jimmy Ellis, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Young. Making his matches even more interesting, Shavers had a suspect chin as evidenced by stoppage losses to Ron Lyle (TKO by 6) and Jerry Quarry (TKO by 1). Shavers challenged for the Heavyweight title twice, including a decision loss to Muhammad Ali in September 1977 and an 11th round TKO loss to Larry Holmes in September 1979. However, he gave both men everything they could handle, rocking Ali and nearly starching Holmes in the 7th round of their contest.

Razor Ruddock was a powerful contender from the 1990’s who is probably best known for his two fights with Mike Tyson in 1991. In their first contest, Ruddock suffered a controversial stoppage loss in the 7th round. He lasted the distance with Iron Mike in the rematch, providing him with some very uncomfortable moments before dropping a 12 round decision. Ruddock also scored victories former Heavyweight champions Mike Weaver (SD 10), Michael Dokes (TKO 4), Greg Page (TKO 8), and James “Bonecrusher” Smith (KO 7), ending his career with a more than respectable 40-5-1 (30 KOs). He didn’t have Earnie’s punching power but he was a much bigger man and more durable.

So here we go, it’s the Earnie Shavers who destroyed Ken Norton in September 1979 vs the version of Ruddock of went the distance with Tyson in June 1991. Who takes it? Let’s fight out.
