Lucas Matthysse Vs Viktor Postol: Breaking It Down by the Numbers

IMG_2941By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

An all out collision course is set for this Saturday October 3rd in Carson California as Lucas “El Maquina” Matthysse, 37-3, 34 KO’s takes on Viktor “The Iceman” Postol 27-0, 11 KO’s for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. Matthysse who was in an all out ward and “Fight of the Year” candidate with Ruslan Provodnikov will have his hands full once again, as the undefeated Postol has his own plans on walking away with the title. Postol who has trained with Freddie Roach for his last two fights is now facing the toughest challenge of his career in Matthysse.

Postol will have to use his reach, his jab, and his boxing skills to keep the hard hitting, heavy handed Matthysse at bay. If Postol can stick to Freddie’s game plan and box, Lucas fans should expect for “The Iceman” to come away victorious. For “El Maquina” to win his first world championship, Lucas will need to cut off the ring, get Postol on the ropes, work the body and methodically break Viktor down. Matthysse also needs to stay inside on Postol utilizing his combinations and power early.

Although Lucas has a better boxing resume, he’s also been in wars with fighters such as Ruslan Provodnikov, Devon Alexander, Danny Garcia, Humberto Soto, Lamont Peterson, Demarcus “Chop Chop” Corley and Zab Judah. At 33, this could prove to be costly for Matthysse. I expect a very entertaining fight Saturday.

“Stacks” Prediction: Matthysse with a Middle round KO.

On the undercard Golden Boy brings fight fans another exciting match-up between undefeated Antonio “Relentless” Orozco, 22-0, 15 KO’s and tough veteran Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto, 65-8-2, 35 KO’s. Orozco had the toughest fight of his career in May, beating the young prospect Emmanuel Taylor. The win marked Orozco’s third-straight unanimous decision. Early in his career Antonio had a seven-fight knockout streak that stretched from February of 2012 to January of 2014. Soto who has been in the fight game for the last sixteen years has won 7 in a row since losing to Lucas Matthysse and looked very impressive in his win over John Molina last September.

Fighting Soto is a big step up in competition for Orozco and a win will have him ready for the elite in the Super Lightweight division. This fight has all the makings for a very entertaining fight and worthy of being a main event.

“Stacks” Prediction: Orozco by unanimous decision.
