Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: Can You Smell It?

TRBy Shannah “Queen B” Beasley

Dwayne Douglas Johnson. When you hear that name, you probably aren’t thinking of anyone special—just sounds like a regular guy with a regular name. But when you hear Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, that gives the name a whole different meaning. Quite possibly the most popular of all professional wrestlers (not to mention the hottest), this man has also been called the most electrifying man in sports entertainment. Who am I to argue with that?

Born in California in 1972, he went on to play football for the Miami Hurricanes and won the National Championship in 1991. After college, he played in the CFL for the Calgary Stampede and was cut from the team in 1995. That’s when he decided to try his luck as a professional wrestler, following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather. With his catch phrase, “Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?” he was a fan favorite and had 17 championship reigns in the WWE with 10 as a world champion—or as he referred to himself, the “People’s Champion.”

In case anyone doubts his popularity, here are a few facts. According to his Wikipedia page, The Rock main evented the most bought pay per view worldwide in WWE history—WrestleMania XXVIII; the most bought pay per view domestically in WWE history – WrestleMania XVII; the second highest attended event in WWE history – WrestleMania 29. He also main evented the 9 highest rated RAWs in history and 10 out of 15 of the highest rated Smack Downs in history. The Rock was definitely the people’s choice.

Besides being outstanding in the wrestling world, he hasn’t been too shabby as an actor. He has appeared on numerous television shows including Saturday Night Live several times. My personal favorite was a skit where Dwayne played The Rock Obama where his character was a cross between the Hulk and the P.O.T.U.S. He has also been in several movies including the Scorpion King, Fast and Furious 5, 6 and 7, Pain and Gain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Snitch, and San Andreas. He has been nominated for many awards—Kids’ Choice Awards, MTV Movie Awards, and Teen Choice Awards, to name a few. He won the Kids’ Choice Favorite Male Butt Kicker award in 2013. Seriously, could that one even have been a question?

Dwayne has one daughter—14 year old Simone. He’s very proud of his Samoan heritage and wears a pe’a tattoo that took 60 hours to complete in honor of that. In 2006 he founded a charity working with at-risk and terminally ill children called the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation. The Rock said, “No matter who you are, being kind is the easiest thing you can do.” I can definitely smell what the Rock is cooking.
