Joseph Diaz Shines In Win – Boxing News
By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña (At Ringside)
Friday night at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California former US Olympian and El Monte native, Joseph Diaz, JR.,18-0, 10 KO’s had an impressive win via unanimous decision over tough Mexican veteran Ruben Tamayo, 25-7-4, 17 KO’s. From the start Diaz used his speed, power, and combinations to outclass Tamayo. Tamayo who gave another young prospect Oscar Valdez a tough battle in his last fight was the slower man tonight. Diaz used his ring generalship to out box Ruben all 10 rounds and win 100-90 on all three judges the scorecards. After the fight Diaz stated “I wanted to prove I was on another level from this guy and win decisively,” “We landed counters and effective shots. I kept my distance, threw my shots and got right back out.
“I proved I’m tough and durable and showed I can adapt to a taller guy to any style.” When asked about fighting at 126 lbs. Diaz said he felt comfortable and planned on making Featherweight his home. I questioned Diaz about the tough competition at Featherweight and asked him when he felt he would be ready for a top 10 opponent. Diaz said he planned on fighting again this year, and then maybe facing three more opponents next year before taking on a top level featherweight fighter. Diaz is scheduled to fight again November 20th at The Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.
On the Co-Main event another Southern California prospect Frankie Gomez, 19-0, 13 KO’s also pitched a shutout in route to a unanimous decision over Jorge Silva, 21-10-2, 17 KO’s. Gomez who hadn’t fought since last year, looked eager to be back in the ring with an early onslaught of punches keeping him in control over Silva the whole fight. Gomez who lost an opportunity to fight Humberto Soto on the Canelo Kirkland undercard due to coming in 7 lbs overweight, was 3 lbs overweight at yesterday’s weigh-in. The good news was Silva was overweight as well so the fight proceeded as planned. Gomez believes he can be back to 140 after one more fight.
