Nicholas Walters Vs Takashi Uchiyama: Will the Hardcore Fans Super Fight Happen?

NWBy “The Commissioner” Alan J. Kindred

Bob Arum of Top Rank has confirmed that there is interest on both sides between RSR Junior Lightweight World Champion (RSR #17 P4P) Takashi Uchiyama, 24-0-1, 20 KO’s, and RSR Featherweight World Champion, competing in both 126 lbs. and 130 lbs. divisions for now, (RSR #11 P4P) Nicholas Walters, 26-0-1, 21 KO’s.

While Walters has secured a modicum of fame by defeating future International Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire, most casual fans have not heard of the reigning 130 lbs. world champion Uchiyama. While immensely popular in his native Japan, he has yet to be noticed, by in large, by the rest of the world. The hardcore fight fans know who he is however. That is why if this fight is signed, the hardcore fight fans will be buzzing.

Both men are skilled punchers and this bout would figure to be a classic match-up with multiple intangibles. While Uchiyama is the older man, Walters is the one moving up a division. Walters was a massive Featherweight so the move up may not affect him very strongly. Both are undefeated, and both are “THE” World Champion in their respective weight classes. It figures to be a high-tech bombs away, Fight of the Year Candidate type fight.

Arum and Top Rank have not released many details regarding negotiations other than saying both parties are very interested in putting the fight together, and that Uchiyama wants to come to the United States for the fight. I’m crossing my fingers hoping this deal gets done soon. I’d love to see it on the undercard of Pacquiao vs. Bradley III.
