Whatchagonnado: No, No, No, I’m Not Sold On Errol Spence, JR YET!

whatcha-gonna-doBy Roy “Sharpshooter” Bennett

Fight Club…

The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club. Well, in that case I’ll just have to take my bareknuckle beating like a man because I’ve gotta have my say about what went down this past weekend.

The Truth?

Former Olympian and welterweight standout Errol Spence, JR. is a cool customer. Nothing seems to ruffle him. Last Saturday night at the Barclays Centre in New York he stepped up a level and beat down Chris Algieri like he stole something.

And now it seems everyone is jumping on the Spence, JR. bandwagon quicker than you can shout, “Trump For President!” I know. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Elect a businessman as President to fix America’s economic woes right? How’s that good idea lookin’ now? Similarly, with Spence, JR. I’m trying to tell ya’ll to look before ya’ll leap. But no one wants to listen. In some people’s eyes this cat can do no wrong. He’s untouchable. Unbeatable.

But wait a minute. It was a fight Spence, JR. was fully expected to win. Spence just beat Chris Algieri. A fighter who got knocked down 6 times by Manny Pacquiao. Algieri – while decent – is hardly a killer. Take a cold shower.

Britain’s Kell Brook will not be losing any sleep. While Spence, JR. is a major talent there are still a few unanswered questions about him. Does he have that fighter’s heart? When he’s bleeding and busted up can he still hang? Garcia, Brook, and Thurman have all done it. Can Spence, JR? He can dish out the hurt but can he take it? That chin has yet to be properly checked by a big puncher. Hey! I’ve got a great idea! Let’s put him in with Randall Bailey next and see what happens! Why ya’ll broke into a cold sweat all of a sudden? You said he was a beast right?

And how does Spence, JR. deal with pressure when a fighter with equal ability won’t let him have his own way? In other words that bandwagon ya’ll partying like crazy on just might be headed for the edge of a cliff.

And therein lies the danger. When the going gets real tough – and it will – maybe he won’t be able to hang. Errol Spence, JR. is a cool cat. I’ve got a hunch he’s too cool for his own good. Anybody wanna jump off that bandwagon yet? I didn’t think so. It got good to ya real quick didn’t it? Ya’ll singin’ and dancin’ right now but remember I told ya’ll. You got too many people on that bandwagon and its moving too fast. If the wheels fall off don’t say I didn’t warn you.
