Conor McGregor & UFC Meet to Discuss a Fight with Floyd Mayweather, JR – Breaking MMA News
UFC superstar Conor McGregor and UFC Brass reportedly met to discuss McGregor’s future with the company. After a very confusing month in which McGregor tweeted about an impending retirement and subsequent “unretirement” got all the people excited, shocked and just plain confused. The fiasco was reportedly due to McGregor’s insistence in foregoing his media responsibilities for a longer training camp.
However, the UFC brass didn’t like McGregor’s absence from the press conference that they abruptly scratched the main event which included McGregor versus Diaz and replaced it with a light heavyweight unification bout between bitter rivals Jon “Bones” Jones and current champ Daniel Cormier. The change was met with mixed reactions, some fans was disappointed because McGregor was the gem in the fight card and clearly was the fighter most casual fans were waiting to see. On the other hand, some purist and longtime followers of MMA countered that it was about time that McGregor was put in his place and that a “REAL” fight should be the main event not a money weight fight.
The McGregor fiasco’s fire burned a little bit more after reports by mainstream media surfaced that a Mayweather versus McGregor boxing match is in the works which added to another wave of confusion and excitement.
The UFC has since then shot down the idea but UFC president Dana White said that the door isn’t completely closed saying: “”Conor McGregor is under contract with the UFC. Listen, if Floyd wants to fight Conor, call me Floyd.” The idea of a crossover fight is very exciting but unlikely as Conor McGregor was spotted in LA in a meeting with UFC brass, here’s what the featherweight champion has to say:
“I met with Dana and Mr. Fertitta, good conversation like it always is. We have a good relationship. It is what it is. It happens. This is the fight game. Sometimes emotions get into it but it’s important to recognize that emotions have no place in business. So that’s essentially what it was last night. We just set it aside. There’s no place for emotions in this. We are doing beautiful things so let’s continue. Let’s fix it and continue”.
It seems that the UFC and McGregor finally come to terms with what should McGregor’s next move will be, there are rumors that he will headline UFC 202 or 203 in New York either versus Nate Diaz or the winner of Edgar versus Aldo.
In any case both matchups are great, both have their own little interesting bits and don’t forget Floyd Mayweather, JR. is clearly very interested in McGregor’s crossover to boxing and if we know Floyd, he smells pay-per-view revenue a mile away, don’t expect this rumor to die down or to be true but the fact is all roads lead to McGregor, he might not be the best MMA fighter but he will sure draw a lot of interest.
