World Boxing Council Female International Champion Maricela Cornejo Gives Back in a Big Way – Boxing News

20160522_082614World Boxing Council Female International Champion, Maricela Cornejo, participated in the 2016 9th Annual Padres Contra El Cancer (Parents Against Cancer) 5k at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. An amazing boy, Justin Gonzalez, recently touched Cornejo, a boy she visited a few weeks before her World Title fight in April. She connected with Justin and his family so great; Childhood Cancer has become a cause near and dear to her heart and will do so to help keep Justin’s memory alive. Former Champion, Top Rank Boxing’s Brandon Rios is an Ambassador of PADRES and has been supporting the cause for over five years now and it was great to see two Boxing Champions take the time out of their days to support this great cause. PADRES Contra El Cáncer is an organization committed to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and their families.

On this same day, Maricela was asked to attend a special event by Trina’s Kids Foundation where they motivated young women and girls in the community, they had their hair and make-up done by celebrity make-up artists. Trina’s Kids is an organization that provides healthy and positive experiences by collaborating with already-existing organizations that focus on today’s urban youth. Maricela was not expecting to speak, but celebrity tattoo artist Rafael Valdez, asked if she would and without any hesitation, she said yes.

In front of the crowd of young women, stood this WBC Female Champion, that was probably once sitting in one of those chairs trying to get that motivation. What she told the girls was deep, strong and had a huge impact of the girls. So much they applauded hard, came to hug her and come tell her their personal stories.

Champions like Maricela Cornejo are not trained to be this way, it comes from within, and a place only they know. For Cornejo, spending the day with Families of Cancer Patients, Urban youth girls was exactly why she wants to succeed in Boxing, because it gives her the opportunity to reach out to the world and help the world, one person at a time. That’s how it should be for all fighters, all Champions. Heart of a Champion, inside the ring and out.
