Deontay Wilder Injured in KO Defense Against Chris Arreola – Boxing News

Deontay-Wilder2By Dave “Madcap” Mroczek

Deontay Wilder emerged victorious last night over Chris Arreola. Arreola, as many suspected, did not have the firepower to compete with the “Bronze Bomber”, and was clearly outgunned in every round before his corner stopped the fight. What is more alarming than the outcome is that Deontay Wilder once again sustained an injury to his right hand.

Deontay hurt his right hand mid-way through the fight with Arreola, and was noticeably fighting one handed for some time during the fight. While he was able to handle Arreola easily, this is now several injuries to the same hand by Wilder, and must be great cause for concern. In addition to breaking the hand Wilder also tore his right biceps muscle and will require two separate surgeries to correct each problem.

This is not the first time Wilder has broken his right hand, in his twelve round bout versus Bermane Stiverne he broke the hand early on in the fight and could be seen favoring it during that fight as well, though he did continue to throw punches with it. He undertook some reconstructive work in hopes the hand would heal up strong. Upon his return to the ring Wilder mentioned protecting the hand in training and in the ring as a priority. Deontay also claimed to have re- aggravated the injury in subsequent fights.

Now with this latest injury there should be major concern amongst Wilder’s fans and handlers. Historically, badly damaged hands have derailed a few good careers and fighters don’t seem to bounce back well from these types of injuries. Will Wilder’s delicate hands be the weak link in his career? It would be a shame. Deontay Wilder has shown great promise as a top heavyweight talent, but hasn’t made his mark in the biggest fights as of yet. It would be a tragedy if he was unable to reach his potential because his hands cannot hold up.
