Vinny’s Views: Did I Tell You How Billy Joe Saunders – Artur Akavov Would Go or What?

This past weekend Billy Joe Saunders struggled big time with cherry picked number 10 WBO middleweight contender Artur Akavov. Yours truly covered the fight just days before and warned that this was a very live under dog going up against a champion who refused to fight any number one contender this past year as well as passing on a trio of name contenders for a voluntary June defense. All three contenders had already lost title bids against true middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. I predicted a Saunders win, but was the only one reporting here on Ringside Report how difficult it would be and how he would struggle for decision victory.

Most reporters had it a blowout, many picking by stoppage. Billy Joe was apologetic and said he disappointed fans, but blamed his yearlong inactivity. Most of the year Saunders took off was of his own volition. If he was out of the gym an entire year than he is a foolish young man. He then said at post fight interview he needed a warm up before a title unification match against “GGG”. Only a week ago, he boasted he could beat Golovkin by being cute. Hey Billy, you can be adorable but you better bring your own personal army as back up. His warm up in 2017 must be the number one contender he avoided all year.
