Demond “D’Bestatit” Nicholson Defeats Isaac Rodrigues by 5th Round KO

The main event for the CBS Sports Network boxing broadcast, live from Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, Maryland, featured Demond “D’Bestatit” Nicholson, 19-3-1, 18 KO’s, in a 10 round super middleweight contest against Brazil’s Isaac Rodrigues, 25-3, 20 KO’s. The third man in the ring was Harvey Dock in what was the first live broadcast from the new event center at the casino’s location.

Nicholson used his stiff left jab early on as he was able to snap back the head of Rodrigues. Rodrigues looked to be the bigger fighter as far as mass when both were in the ring. Rodrigues chose to move forward as the aggressor on the front foot though the best shots were landed by Nicholson.

Nicholson continued to apply his stiff jab early in the second. Rodrigues was able to land a solid right hand near the two minute mark. Nicholson caught Rodrigues with a snapping combination capped by a hard right hook late in the second, the best punch in the fight. Rodrigues saw some success early in the third as Nicholson was backed to the ropes. Rodrigues was also able to land a nice left hook that napped Nicholson’s head near the tail end of the first minute. Nicholson came back with a solid right uppercut midway through as the fighters exchanged in the middle of the round. Nicholson used his jab to close out the round as he boxed from the outside in a close round.

In the fourth, Rodrigues was able to Nicholson with a hard right hand that sent him to the ropes before tying up. Nicholson’s left eye was starting to visibly show swelling. Nicholson bounced back and caught Rodrigues with a body combination that sent him into the ropes where he landed a napping right uppercut again. From there, both fighters met in the ring as they each threw and landed combinations as the fight started to open up more. Near the 20 second mark they each landed hard hooks in what was turning into a very exciting night of action.

The fifth round Nicholson started out the action as the aggressor. Nicholson was able to control the action and opened a cut on the right eye of Rodrigues. Nicholson caught Rodrigues with a set of hard hooks early in the sixth and they seemed to fuel Rodrigues to fight more as he chose to fire back. Nicholson then caught Rodrigues with a hard combination before going to the body with a ferocious left and right combination that dropped Rodrigues. The bloodied and stunned Rodrigues wasn’t able to answer Harvey Dock’s count ending what was an excellent—action fight.

Officially, the fight went down as a fifth round knockout for Nicholson. Nicholson spoke of the ups and downs in the post fight interview and made it known that he’s looking to take on the top fighters available at 168 pounds. A name that popped up was the undefeated David Benavidez. Only time will tell what the future holds but that is a fight worth watching. Until then, enjoy the night.
