Dereck Chisora: The Upset of Wladimir Klitschko on the Horizon
Dereck Chisora, 14-0, 9 KO’s, is either going to Germany to have his head blown away by the power of a Klitschko or is going to come back with a belt or three.
If he wins in Mannheim, many shall have to find a knife and fork to eat their words and some humble pie.
The lack of a very healthy heavyweight division has thrown up a challenger light on experience who has only boxed 63 professional rounds. Some have laughingly suggested that Chisora will be in a better position because he will have plenty to study whilst Wladimir will not know what awaits him! Be serious. Are we really suggesting someone who has fought almost as many fights as the other has fought rounds has never had to fight an opponent with sketchy details of their strengths and weaknesses? This is the age of You Tube and 24 hour news after all!
As Dereck studies the losses inflicted on Wladimir, will he really learn much from studying losses to the likes of Corrie Sanders, Ross Puritty and Lamon Brewster? These must surely be eclipsed in any study by the wins that have come over an unbeaten run of 6 years?
What IS certain is that Chisora has to be at his peak.
Physically he must pile on the pressure and make Wladimir realize that the phrase – “nothing to lose” can spell destruction for camp Klitschko. There are people who think Wladimir has demonstrated some mental frailty and if Chisora can keep harrying Wladimir, chase him round the ring the champ shall disorientate himself into the ground.
I have actually read someone suggesting Dereck CHASE Wladimir around the ring – can you imagine?
If Dereck Chisora has any chance of coming home with three versions of the belt he has to make sure that the occasion and the crowd do NOT get to him. For him there must be no freezing on the night. He has to go to Germany fully focused. The fact that Wladimir seems to think so little of his British opponent that it is nothing more than stepping stone, the entree to the main course of a fight with WBA Heavyweight Champion, David Haye should spur Chisora on.
Dereck has cleaned up the British Heavyweight Division and whilst there may be one or two behind him who could mount a serious challenge in the future his dispatching of the likes of Sam Sexton and Danny Williams makes things clearer for the domestic UK market.
Whilst Martin Rogan, Matt Skelton, Danny Williams and Michael Sprott still sit in the top 10 of British Heavyweights, the likes of Tyson Fury and Larry Olubamiwo if they keep on track, should make the domestic scene interesting.
The fights that Chisora has had indicate he can punch – his demolition of Sexton in the ninth shows that. They indicate he can stop things quickly – Williams round 2, Baker round 2 and Zurab Noniashvilli – round 3 shows that.
Can he last 12 rounds?
We don’t know yet. He’s never had to get past 8. Can he get up off the floor and win? Can he take the punishment that Klitschko is likely to dish out? Can he perform in front of a huge PPV crowd?
Can he?
Will he?
Should he?
There are very few indicators as to whether Chisora will be able to last or to take what Wladimir can dish out. However Chisora has the heart of a lion. If anyone can go to Germany and fight like he has nothing to lose and all to gain then it is Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora. He shall go in to win and will come out of the ring knowing that there is nothing more he could have done or have prepared prior to the fight. That shall be the brave version of the reports. The intelligent analysis will have to go deeper.
The fans will be out in force with flags and prayers. They shall cheer and believe and I, for one, hope that Dereck comes home with more than bruises. He should return at least with credibility.
If he were to win it would be one of the greatest upsets for a long, long time. The major advantage would be his next fight could be stage one of a unification bout with UK’s David Haye! In a saga that has more twists that Wisteria Lane that would be worthy of the story thus far!
