Alistair Overeem Vs Cain Velasquez: Breaking News

By Sean Farrell

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently made a suggestion when he appeared on HDNet’s “Inside MMA”. While Coker addressed the subject of cross-promotion super fights between Strikeforce and the UFC’s best, his suggestion was Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem vs. UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. “Alistair is our champion, he’s our guy,” stated Coker. “I’ve followed his career since he was in Pride. Cain’s a good wrestler, becoming a better striker. That would be a fun fight to watch, but I’ve got to take Alistair because he’s our champion.”

It still remains unclear because of contractual obligations as to when MMA fans will start to see these kinds of super fights, but it’s hard to imagine with the UFC behind it that it will not take too long considering the buzz for them by fans and fighters alike. Alistair Overeem showed eagerness in his revealing of his interest to fight Velasquez.

“Alistair Overeem (strikeforce champion) vs. Cain Valasquez (UFC champion) sounds good to me on PPV, we are ready to fight anybody under the right conditions!” Overeem wrote, adding that he only desires a fight with Velasquez because he “always looks for the challenge.” This led to Velasquez responding about that possible fight, relaying his eagerness for the fight as well when he stated “That would be good, I’m hoping to see what happens with the tournament and I’m hoping to get back as soon as possible. I think Overeem is a really good fighter, he’s explosive; I think he’s definitely one of the best out there right now. That would be awesome for the fans as well.”

Until then we are left to fantasize, dream, drool, and just talk about the most intriguing match ups in fighting since the boxing days of old. But, between the talents such as Overeem and Velasquez, there are almost a hundred more incredible fights such as Nick Diaz vs. George St. Pierre, Gilbert Melendez vs. Frankie Edgar, Mayhem vs. Sonnen, Henderson vs. Shogun, Couture vs. Fedor the list is literally endless with UFC vs. Strikeforce super fight possibilities. Have no fear as Zuffa has always figured out how they’re going to progress and the new landscape in front of them created by their new purchase will eventually get these fighters in the cage together.
