Former WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto, 27-1, 21 KO’s tasted defeat for the first time in a truly exciting fight last night on HBO when Victor Ortiz, 29-2,2, 22 KO’s took his strap via a unanimous decision that saw several knockdowns of each fighter.
In the end, Ortiz’s hand was raised as the new champion by scores of 115-110, 114-112, and 114-111.
In losing last night, Berto probably gained more fans by his gutsy loss than with all of his victories and title defenses prior. Look for some exciting things from the new champion Ortiz who in a post fight interview with Larry Merchant, stated to the boxing world, that he wanted in on the Manny Pacquiao sweepstakes.
