Wes Craven: The Man and His Nightmares – RSR Book Review
As a horror filmmaker, I was really eager to read this book, covering the film career of the man that brought us THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, SWAMP THING, SCREAM and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Written by John Wooley, “Wes Craven: The Man and His Nightmares,” brings you into the world of a filmmaker, from the beginning stages to the top of the movie business with everything in between.
Craven’s religious background is a common thing with horror film makers and it’s also common with those that have a little budget, which is how THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT came about. The shocking horror film is the break through movie for many filmmakers. The unfortunate side effect that Craven suffered and that many may not realize is the tendency of a filmmaker not being taken seriously and not being able to move away from horror to make other genres. Sadly, many believe horror isn’t that much better than X rated movies and the respect isn’t there. Craven fought against the system and won and also found contentment.
Wooley is a fantastic writer, capturing the story of Craven very well, using his commentary along with segments of actual interviews with the writer/director, bringing an accurate and frank history of the climb to the top of the movie world and also the behind the scenes going – ons of his biggest films, including A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and the SCREAM franchise.
This book is really a must read for filmmakers as well as horror fans. It provides a window into what goes into making a movie and exactly what you must sacrifice. Along with detailed accounts of Craven’s film and TV history, we are treated to the origins of each movie. I also enjoyed the purpose of the movie SHOCKER and what the hopes were for it.
I highly recommend Wes Craven: The Man and His Nightmares. John Wooley paints a vivid picture, written well, and highly enjoyable and informative. A great read for certain.
