Ben Henderson vs Mark Bocek
This bout was loaded with Bocek attempting subs and Henderson reversing and landing combos out of the skirmish. Henderson was pumped after round 2 and was motioning to the crowd to get louder and more involved for the last stanza. In the final frame Henderson cruised after fending off a leglock that had his leg in an unusual position but once he slipped it, he unloaded strikes on his way to victory by 30-27 UD.
Matsushenko vs Brilz
This fight ended quickly as Matsushenko came forward and landed a combo early and got the stoppage via KO in round 1. Brilz asked the ref what happened and was told he was out and Brilz refused to believe it.
Randy Couture vs Machida
The last fight in the iconic career got underway with both men feeling each other out for a minute and a half. Machida lands a soft jab and knee to the body but Couture counters with a right hand. Both men continue to fell each other out and Machida lands a knee to the body and Couture counters with a right. Couture pushes Machida to the cage but Machida slips out and lands a kick to the liver followed by a knee to the body. Round 2 Machida comes out and lands a flurry and both men go down and back to their feet feeling each other out some more, Couture is finding it hard to find his range and eats a karate kid style crane front kick to the face KOing the UFC legend.
Aldo vs Hominick Co-Main Event for the UFC Featherweight Championship
Fight starts with Aldo coming out fast, he lands a pair of leg kicks and a few bolo punches then scores a takedown. Hominick goes for an armbar but Aldo defends and starts landing elbows opening up a cut. The two work from the ground with aldo on top the rest of the fight. Rpund 2 Aldo starts with another leg kick, Hominick scores a combo and a solid liver shot and slows Aldo down. Aldo scores the takedown and its a stalemate until stood up by Mcarthy. Aldo scores another takedown but this time passes into side control and again both men are stalled against the cage wall to end the round. Round 3 Hominick opens up his hands a little more and both men trade in the center of the cage. Aldo has a takedown stuffed and back to the center of the cage and trade some more, Aldo starts to open up tagging Hominick who answers with a few straight right hands. Aldo scores a takedown but recovers quickly and lands a few punches back in the center of the cage, Hominick is starting to find his range now and Aldo lands a solid shot and drops Hominick, Aldo goes to finish but can’t and conserves his energy ground and pounding his way to end the round. Round 4 Hominick’s eyes are bruised up and he is blinking rapidly with his left eye after eating the shot from Aldo in round 3. Aldo lands a leg kick and a right hand followed by a knee. Hominick tries to find his range again but its more difficult now, Aldo is now picking his shots and counter punching. Hominick gets hit low on accident and we pause. Hominick recovers quick but Aldo’s leg kicks are now slowing down Hominick. Aldo keeps throwing leg kicks, Hominick lands a double jab and is clipped by a counter and dropped and Aldo has control and is getting bashed up by Aldo’s elbows. Hominick has a himotoma from hell and the fight may be stopped as it looks like Rahman’s knot. The doc takes a look and Hominick is asked if he wants to continue he says yes and we are back on. Aldo scores another takedown and ends the round in top position again. Round 5 doc comes in again Hominick is good though and he starts out fine. Hominick is now gushing blood after a bolo punch landed and rocks him. Hominick has top control and starts dominating Aldo on the ground and has him hurt and wails away at the gassing Aldo. Aldo is trying to weather the storm covering up and controlling the wrist but Hominick is ripping into Aldos body and lands a huge shot and continues to rain them down trying to finish Aldo. Aldo is gassed and Hominick is dominating him now raining down shots after looking at the clock trying to get the stoppage with 45 seconds left. Aldo is out of gas and is being beaten badly but he isn’t out. The fight goes the distance. Aldo wins the fight by UD.
Georges St. Pierre vs Jake Shields Main Event for the UFC Welterweight Championship
The highly anticipated main event for the welterweight championship starts out with St. Pierre feeling out Shields. Both men trade pitter pat punches and kicks but Shields catches St Pierre’s kick and walks him to the cage wall and works from the clinch. St Pierre spins out and is free and back to the center of the cage where both men try to find their ranges and jabs. St Pierre missed a spinning back kick but follows with a kick to the body, he then lands a solid jab and throws the spin kick again missing. Neither man is willing to gamble yet and GSP lands a right hand. Shields looks pathetic on the feet and is trying to catch St Pierre’s kick but eats a power jab and drops him then follows with another once Shields is back to his feet.
Shields catches a kick but GSP slips out and slows the pace back down. St Pierre is starting to get loose to end the round and lands an overhand right hand and misses a head kick to end the round. Round 2 starts with Shields on the defense and St Pierre pushing forward. GSP is landing his jab to the body at will and both men circle for most of the first minute. GSP lands leg kick and circles again, Shields answers with a kick but is immediately answered by GSP.
Shields is leaving his chin open and is tagged hard by another overhand right foloowed by a superman punch. St Pierre is landing the overhand right at will now and Shields is clearly outclassed on the feet. GSP lands the spin kick to the body and Shields clinches and breaks and both men circle and throw check kicks. St Pierre lands a few more overhand rights and a leg kick that drops Shields and he tries to clinch but he can’t do anything with it. Round 3 is ALL GSP he lands jab after jab and kick after kick to the leg until scoring a takedown at the end of the round.
Round 4 is ALL GSP again but is bloodied up under the eye, he does more of the same as in round 3 and throws a huge head kick dropping Shields clearly hurting him but not putting him out. Shields recovers and tries for a takedown but gets nothing. Round 5 is ALL St Pierre as he busted Shields up some more with his jab, superman punch and overhand right. The bloodied champion reigns supreme earning the unanimous decision in a weird scoring of 50-45 48-47 48-47.
