Ashley Theophane – Jason Cook: Boxing Results

By Samaarah Choubak (At Ringside)

If you’re a champion like Ashley Theophane, you will be challenged time and time again. This time the challenger was a Welshman Jason Cook, and he fought and struggled, but in the last round, in utter amazement to everyone including himself, he was knocked out Cook in the first minute of the last round.

Theophane was dominating the entire fight and is a different boxer and has a set of boxing characteristics that cannot be precisely described. He is one of a kind and totally not in alike in character or quality to Jason Cook. The whole fight was phenomenal and mind arousing for the fans that came to support them in Wembley Arena London and those watching it on Channel 5 UK promoted by Hennessy Sports.

Some rounds were exceptional where he used body shots to weaken Cook and the game plan was superb and was executed dramatically. However Theophane did inflict a penalty in round 5 for punching below the belt which weakened Cook somewhat but he still came back tough with a lot of heart.

In round 7, Theophane hurt Cook’s eye which opened up and in the last round he threw a giant left and a huge right which placed Cook to the ring floor. This of course was counted and Cook, in all fairness to him, after 10 rounds just could not get up even though he if he felt a desire to. He told me: “I found the fight tiring and he did give me a few low blows”. Those shots below the belt, according to Cook’s trainer Darren Wilson, had a big effect on his man in the later rounds when Theophane came on strong.

Cook also said: “I’m gutted…I’m not going to quit. I know some people think I should but I showed there is still something left in me.

I’ve been in the gym all year so I’m going to have a rest first and spend some time with my girlfriend and family. Then I’ll sit down with my management and my team and see where I go. Theophane’s nowhere near world class though. I don’t think he would have beaten me two years ago. When I was European champion he wouldn’t have laced my boots. He did show me some respect after the fight though.”

Cook is going to be taking a break from boxing and is currently in discussion with his management team with regard to his next career move.

Theophane in his changing room showed off his belt to the camera’s and said: “I working him down bit by bit, the body shots that I was that I gave him earlier moments he was making it as if it was so maybe one was low but I got him with some good body shots he was getting tired, and Harry my trainer told me to keep it at the headshots because he was trying to points off and stuff so bit by bit I was breaking him down with my jab and when I saw that he was getting tired I went back to the top”.

“I knew that he was dangerous I saw him when he knocked out the European Champion so I knew that I had to keep my hands up and pump out the jabs and break him down and that’s what I did”.

So now he has thirty wins to his record and is off for a nice long break. Congratulations to Ashley Theophane for retaining his title.
