How good is the new WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder, 33-0, 32 KO’s? Well, I thought Bermaine Stiverne was hurting him to the body. I felt he was very vulnerable in that fight and Bermaine had ever opportunity to knock Deontay out, but just didn’t throw punches that he is very capable of throwing. Wilder of course has tremendous power and is very dangerous for anyone he fights. That being said, he has very little experience fighting people that can adjust and that can hit back for a prolonged period of time. Deontay can do one of two things at this point. Falter under the pressure and lifestyle shift that comes with a new life as Champion of the WORLD, or stay focused and actually get better now that he has the supreme confidence that comes with having earned the right to wear the same belt as his childhood hero’s and legends like Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis,  Mike Tyson and Jack Dempsey to name just a few former Heavyweight Champions.

Bermaine obviously for example took his eye off the preverbal ball and came in completely unprepared for his first defense. What will the huge life adjustment do to a fighter who accomplished the dream every boxer dreams of accomplishing going to do to Deontay? Time will tell. If he goes back to the drawing board and learns from the subtle lessons he was given like, protecting his body being important, maybe moving his head, and punching between his opponents attempts instead of just punching when an opponent is not punching as he will need to get more finesse to beat more experienced fighters. I see Wilder as a vulnerable champion. It would be very surprising to me if he could hold the belt for long because mainly of his inexperience.

He seems so open and vulnerable. He was hurt in the fight when hit clean and in time we will know if that is due to his lack of whiskers or is it his complete open and high held chin or both and which one leads to his demise? Deontay is a breath of fresh life in American boxing for sure and a very interesting one to keep an eye on. I feel he will be around as an interesting figure in the sport for a while as he seems to live in a very wreck less manner one that would lead to good copy for journalists and one that makes following him as a public figure mesmerizing, but this is all conjecture.

He will need to keep his chin down, arms tucked in and discipline intact to remain at the top of the heap for long. He can do it. But will he? It will be a fun ride to keep an eye on and that says a lot for the sport in America after many years of lack of interest due to a lack of American talent and personality. We have that back in Deontay, let’s hope it/he lasts…chin down, elbows tucked and mind in the game Deontay we are all behind you!
