Cris Cyborg kicked off an amazing weekend in MMA by retaining her Invicta FC championship. The dominant fashion of her performance was a reminder to everyone watching that she is the greatest threat to Ronda Rousey’s UFC belt.

It took Cyborg just 45 seconds to stretch her unbeaten run to a decade. Her supremacy over the challenger, Faith Van Duin, was clear from the off. As soon as the first right hand landed, Van Duin was cowering. Once Cyborg had her against the cage she threw a whirlwind of punches before landing a booming knee to the body which dropped the New Zealander. From there the fight was all but over and it only took a couple of strikes from the top before the referee stepped in.

The hastiness of this victory means that her two victories this year combine for a time of one minute and thirty one seconds – eerily similar to the record of Ronda Rousey.

“Rowdy” was of course a topic of conversation during Cyborg’s post fight interviews: “hey, Ronda Rousey, I come for you” Cyborg said, following it up with, “Ronda Rousey, stop running.”

This is a reference to the fact that the bantamweight champion insists that Cyborg must drop down from her usual weight: 145lbs and make 135lbs in order to fight her for the belt.

Earlier this year the Brazilian veteran signed a deal with the UFC, giving fans hope that the super-fight between the two top women in the game was around the corner. However, the weight issue does not seem to be a problem which either fighter seems keen on solving.

After her most recent victory, a 14 second submission of Cat Zingano, Rousey said, “If she’d like to come to the UFC and fight at 35, then yes I would”. Cyborg seemed equally stubborn a few days ago, “If she wants this fight to happen, she would make 145 and face me. She used to be a featherweight but ran to bantamweight.”

Despite this unwillingness to cooperate from either party, the fight will eventually happen. Ronda Rousey is the UFC’s leading star and they want her to have the biggest fights possible – there is no other women’s fight that will attract more attention than Rousey versus Cyborg for the UFC championship.

Ultimately, the company will throw enough money in to the fight that weight is no longer an issue.
