How About Gennady Golovkin Vs James DeGale in a Year?

GGGBy Sultan “Nomad” Arapov

With Andre Ward, seemingly, unwilling to face Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, the most plausible option between 154 and 168 pounders remaining for “GGG”, must be James DeGale. It is impossible to catch a single article on the web that would discuss this potential clash, which is, to say the least, wondering, given the perspectives of such a match-up. The issue, certainly, is given undeservedly small attention. Other than Canelo Alvarez, obviously, one name that should come up for Golovkin, should be DeGale, given a perspective of their meeting at Wembley. If even a career payday that Golovkin offers to Carl Froch can`t make the latter get to the ring, then a hungry lion, that DeGale is, must be an appreciative candidate.

This potential fight is lucrative, assuming it’s held at Wembley. For both of the fighters, it is the most lucrative option, unless “GGG” gets Alvarez. James DeGale is one of the best and most popular active fighters in the UK. With the international fame of Golovkin added to DeGale`s home star status, they would be expected to sell out Wembley, as it would, arguably, be a candidate for the Fight of the Year. Nowadays, Golovkin has achieved a status of an international star. While, the US is still a major market yet to conquer, there are a few active fighters that could compete with Golovkin on fame on the global scale.

With that said, looking at over 150,000 PPVs against Lemieux, who, though, has been mostly known to a hardcore part of the audience. Nevertheless, Golovkin is among a few, to sell out huge on the both coasts of America.

Secondly, of no less importance is the fact that DeGale is among a few not to mind facing Golovkin, according to his recent interviews. The fact that James fought such top fighters in his division asDegale Lucian Bute and Andre Dirrell, and in their backyard, is quite an eloquent argument to trust him on his earnest. While it is widely known, that a problem of getting high level opponents to the ring with Golovkin has been major and continuous issue for him since 2008, when he was already willing to fight Felix Sturm, with the latter, though, being not excited at the idea. In 2009, Golovkin asked his ex-promoters in Germany Universum Promotions, to organize a bout against Kelly Pavlik. Failure to organize fights against top level fighters was an ultimate reason why Golovkin eventually decided leaving Germany.

Finally, for the both boxers, it would the biggest fight and test in their careers. As such, it is a legacy cementing issue for both of them. Furthermore, the audience, from hardcore to casuals, international and British fans, should be more than pleased to see a truly high level entertainment. To remind, DeGale is supposed to be the biggest challenge for Golovkin among all other active options. He is the IBF Champion, and, arguably, #1 man in his division. James is all-round truly top level. Stylistically, there is a similarity between DeGale and Willie Monroe, with a nuance of the former being more crafty at using those skills. Added to that is the fact, that James is bigger than Golovkin, he is taller, longer and heavier. That should be another challenging factor for “GGG”.
