AIBA Update

AIBABy Jeffrey “Italian Medallion” Cellini

AIBA is considering making more changes for international boxing after more controversy occurred in this year’s Olympics. This is nothing new with the sport where there is always more talk about the scoring, and not the boxing itself, after the Summer Games have ended. AIBA president Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu has held meetings with the vice presidents and commission chairs of his organization to discuss a wide range of topics including implementing a new scoring system.

Dr. Wu has publicly stated, “Since I became the President of AIBA, we have always been looking at ways in which we might progress the sport, pushing it further for the benefit of the national federations and the boxers. Throughout boxing’s rich history, we have seen important changes that have defined the sport we love today, and I know that there are still improvements to be made. Now, we are holding strategic discussions between AIBA executives to lay down new milestones to maintain that positive evolution and vision.”

Furthermore, AIBA is examining ways to address violations of the AIBA code of conduct, especially those that occurred during the Olympics. “Individuals and associated Federations have been forwarded to the Disciplinary Commission for further investigation, with appropriate actions to follow. It is essential that the AIBA family operates under this Code that epitomizes the key values of our sport: respect, fairness, integrity and transparency,” AIBA said in a statement.

One possible way that the AIBA is looking at improving the scoring system in future for the Olympics is to allow all five judges to score the bout instead of only three. Currently, there are five judges that score the fight at ringside, but only three random scorecards are used to determine the winner.

However, (personal opinion) maybe the AIBA should change the rounds from three three-minute rounds to five two-minute rounds so that the judges would have an easier time in scoring the fight.
