Battlecruisers, the explosive new strategy game from Kiwi indie studio, Mecha Weka, is holding out at the #2 spot in New and Trending games on STEAM this week. The game, which launched on February 4, has attracted 94% positive reviews from players who are surprised to discover the particle system pyrotechnics—making for stunning and unique explosions with every battle.

“Battlecruisers gives you an experience of seeing war from a new perspective,” said one German reviewer known as Knuffybaer. “The graphics are gorgeous and the music is really nice!” said CronkhinatorYT. “This game was amazing,” said The Bluez. “Buy this game so the developers make a multiplayer mode, and this will become bigger than Worms,” predicted Suntory.

TheGamer.com was also struck by the visual effects, noting in its news story: “Battlecruisers’ explosions look great, with water and destruction effects that belie its humble appearance.”

“The 2D side-view is also tremendously uncommon for the RTS genre,” noted RTSGaming.com in its launch coverage. “Dynamic explosions and lighting give the game a surprisingly dramatic contrast.”

Battlecruisers is the creation of two indie creators from New Zealand—designer, Peter Casale, and developer, Felix Mann—who have been blown away by the reaction from the gaming community.

“When I saw Battlecruisers on the front page of STEAM I had to quadruple-check that I wasn’t imagining things,” Peter said. “I got friends and family in countries all over the world to check it wasn’t just me. Then I stood on my deck and whooped a dozen times at 180dB before remembering I had neighbours.”

The overwhelmingly positive reception means the duo can get to work on expanding the game at the request of numerous players; something they weren’t sure could ever happen.

“Felix thought we’d make twelve sales and have to quit,” Peter said fondly. “Part of me thought that too—getting an indie game off the ground is just so tough. But at the same time, I knew deep down we had something really different here, if only we could gain that initial traction with players.”

“Expanding the game will take time,” he added, “especially when it’s just the two of us. But now we know there’s a real demand for Battlecruisers, we can push ahead with our wishlist… which has practically doubled in the last few days. Players are asking for a lot of additions—more levels, multiplayer, sandbox mode, skirmishes, translations, everything—so now we need to prioritise what we want to do next and then get to work.”

Battlecruisers is aimed at casual strategy fans seeking immersion in short bursts with battles lasting around 5-10 minutes. Players can download the game now for a 20% discount on STEAM during the launch period. The game is also available on tablet via Google Play and the App Store.
