City of Chicago On Edge as Police Release Footage of Police Shooting of 13 Year Old Adam Toledo

By Ty Ross

A little over two weeks ago, Chicago police officer Eric Stillman fired at 13 year old Adam Toledo in a foot chase that had already apprehended another suspect.

After the dark alley pursuit, Toledo finally gave up and complied. According to witnesses, the seventh grader put up his hands, almost at the same time the officer fired. A shot to the chest would see Toledo fall, unresponsive.

There are conflicting reports from the officer, and witnesses in the community as to whether Toledo had a gun, and if he pointed it or shot at officers. Listening to the officers on scene from released body cam footage, they themselves were also confused.

It hasn’t been reported why 13 year Toledo was out at 2:30 am, what relation he has, if any, to 21 year old Ruben Roman. Roman, after reportedly firing several shots in the chase, was shortly apprehended.

Bodycam footage show no evidence that Toledo did anything other than run, and eventually surrender. This has been corroborated by witnesses to the shooting.

Businesses have boarded up, and a city already on the brink, is bracing for unrest. Another 13 year old kid of color, gunned down in an alley by a police officer. What happens next is going to test the will of a city in turmoil, as the Latino community seeks justice for one of their own. And the law enforcement community seeks to protect, one of theirs.
