Less Than Two Weeks After Being Fatally Shot By Sheriff’s Deputies, Andrew Brown, Jr. Is Laid To Rest In Elizabeth City

By Ty Ross

Civil unrest continues in Elizabeth City, NC. 12 days after Andrew Brown, Jr. was shot by Pasquotank Sheriff’s Deputies, a community saw him buried. The Reverend Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy for 42 year old Brown.

Protests continued after the family was allowed to view just 20 seconds of body cam footage from just one of the four cameras and dash cam footage recorded. Leading to demands of transparency and release of all available recordings.

The community wasn’t alone in their request. Mike Cox, attorney for Pasquotank County and the Sheriff’s Dept, as well as the Sheriff’s Department themselves made pleas to the presiding judge, to release the footage. But it fell on deaf ears. A NC Superior Court Judge declined to release video of the shooting, but did say that a few members of Brown’s family, including his adult son, along with one attorney could view it within 10 days.

The family ordered a private autopsy, that revealed Brown was shot a total of five times. With the fatal blow being to the back of the head.

Footage from a camera near the Brown home captured arrival of the officers and the few minutes before Brown’s death. The family has described the shooting as an execution.

In an attempt to curb the protests, a curfew was extended to midnight and Elizabeth City officials have drafted legislation requiring protesters to obtain a permit at least 15 days before planned assembly. Which means any continuing protests of the Brown shooting could mean criminal charges for the protesters.
