The Four Officers Involved In The Death Of George Floyd Indicted On Federal Charges
Former Minneapolis police officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and Alexander Keung, have been indicted by a grand jury for their roles in the death of George Floyd. They, along with convicted murderer Derek Chauvin have all been charged with violating Floyd’s civil rights. Chauvin, for the violation of Floyd’s constitutional rights against unreasonable force, and Thao and Keung for failing to intervene.
These charges are separate from the state of Minnesota’s case, that has so far resulted in trial and conviction of Derek Chauvin. Chauvin has also been indicted in a case from 2017 where he struck, a then 14 year old, several times with a flashlight. Chauvin is also accused of holding the teen by the throat and kneeling on his neck and upper back as the boy was unresponsive and handcuffed. Violating the teen’s constitutional right to be free of unreasonable force.
The Justice Dept is pursuing a civil investigation into the Minneapolis Police Dept and City of Minneapolis for use of pattern. This investigation is being handled by the Civil Rights Division and the US Attorney’s Office.
So while Chauvin seeks to appeal the state verdict, it looks as though the fight for justice is far from over. Let’s hope that all involved are held accountable, and Floyd’s family can finally have some closure. And some peace.
