Genaro Hernandez Dead at 45: RSR Says Goodbye to the Two-Time World Champion

By Geno McGahee

RSR is sad to report the passing of former WBA Super Featherweight Champion, Genaro Hernandez, 38-2-1, 17 KO’s. He passed away after a long bout with cancer at the age of 45. He would win his first title in 1991 and defended it 8 times, leading to a pay per view showdown with the undefeated Oscar De La Hoya for the WBO Lightweight title.

Hernandez would come up short, losing via TKO in the 6th round, but he continued on and won the WBC Super Featherweight Title in 1997 via split decision over the great Azumah Nelson. He would defend it three times before losing to Floyd Mayweather, JR., in what would be his last fight in 1998.

Hernandez was a tall and intimidating champion that earned two world titles and only lost to two of the best fighters of their generation when they were in their prime in De La Hoya and Mayweather, JR. RSR sends our condolences to the family and friends of Genaro Hernandez. RIP champ.
