Al Perez is a singer, songwriter and musician from Los Angeles. His last EP “Steps” received critical acclaim in the music world. His new single “Frequency” was released on 14 February. He is currently working on a new album.

KB: Did you always want to be a singer and musician growing up?

Yes, absolutely. Ever since I was about eight years old, watching my aunt and uncle play music in my grandmother’s front yard in Los Angeles. I knew I wanted to be a rock star. Music just felt like what I was meant to do.

KB: Who were your musical heroes?

Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, The Beach Boys, Bob Seger, Boz Scaggs, Journey, Jason Isbell, Sade, and Willie Nelson. They all had a huge influence on me in different ways.

KB: How would you describe the music you make, and why should people give it a listen?

My music is an artistic, personal journey, a reflection of my life’s memories, hopes, dreams, and observations. It’s all presented in a poetic, heartfelt way against a rich musical backdrop. I think people will connect with its honesty and emotion.

KB: Your EP “Steps”: how did the process go, and what are the songs about?

It’s pretty simple. Steps tells the story of my life journey through recovery and the idea that we can all get a second chance, a “do-over” in life. It’s deeply personal and very real.

KB: I read that you’re performing Live with a seven-piece band?

Yes! The band can be as big as seven members when the budget allows, but we always have a solid five-piece lineup. It’s an amazing assembly of incredibly talented musicians, and they truly bring the songs to life.

KB: Are there artists you’d love to collaborate with, or you wished you had?

Ozzy would be number one for sure. I’ve been deeply inspired and connected to his music from a young age. Jason Isbell would be another dream collaborator. He’s a fantastic writer. Honestly, the list is huge!

KB: If you could make an album with seven of your favorite songs by other artists, what would you pick and why?

I’d go with:

“Lowdown” — Boz Scaggs: great writing!

“Turn the Page” — Bob Seger: moving and influenced me to be a musician. I want to be the rock star in this song!

“You Shook Me All Night Long” — AC/DC: just a great fucking song! ROCKS!

“Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” — Robert Palmer: smooth and sexy.

“Faithfully” — Journey: arena rock at its finest with killer vocals.

“Crazy Train” — Ozzy Osbourne: life changing Rock lyrics and great guitar.

“Ordinary Love” — Sade: sexy smooth elegant baby making music.

“Traveling Alone” — Jason Isbell: world class song writer.

“In My Room” — The Beach Boys: music changing recording with stunning harmony layers.

“Shivers” — Ed Sheeran: sexy grooving song and cool lyrics.

That’s more than seven, but I could never narrow it down completely! Each one connects to a moment in my life.

KB: What are you currently up to?

My new song “Frequency” was released on Valentin’s Day and I’m starting work on a new album. I’m also playing Live shows, in the middle of buying and selling a house, and — well — looking for love!
