Marcos Maidana: Ready for War with Devon Alexander Saturday Night – BOXING NEWS

Exclusive Interview by Marc Anthony

“He is a fast opponent we have watched lots of tape on him and we have trained accordingly and I am ready.” – Marcos Maidana

Marcos Maidana, 31-2, 28 KO’s, is very dangerous to anyone who decides to fight him, raw aggressive art with a killer extinct. At any moment, he can end it. People like to see action but with uncertainty, and this is what Maidana brings. He doesn’t bring an undefeated record nor a game plan designed to win on points as has plagued many combat sports athletes. Simply put, Marcos is the most exciting combat sports fighter.

You would think that a man with such raw aggression would be equally the same outside of the ring. Such is not the case.

Outside of the ring he can be found joking around, similar to how a kid would be…entertained by what the world around him has to offer. Some would assume that a man like that must have had a rough childhood. On the contrary, “El Chino” (Maidana’s nickname) has said in the past that he has had a wonderful childhood. Both of his parents are very loving. In fact, in his spare time, between media tours and fights around the world, he goes fishing and enjoys taking time with his family.

The Early Years

This former 2-time Argentine national amateur champion made his professional debut on June 6th of 2004 against fellow Argentine Adan Mironchik, stopping him in the first round. After that fight he racked up eight straight early stoppage victories. On August 5th of 2005, Maidana beat Daniel Carriqueo by unanimous decision, making it the first time anyone has gone the distance with him. Consequently, after that fight, he racked up another 15 early stoppage wins.

Championship moments

On February 7th, 2009, his shot at the WBA World Light welterweight title against Andriy Kotelnyk in enemy territory was fought. Marcos was reported to have thrown over 1200 punches but it was a close decision loss to the champion. Having gained popularity around the European side of the world and Latin America, it was time to come to the states. His first fight on American soil was for the interim WBA World light welterweight title on July 27th of 09, against powerful power puncher Victor Ortiz and both men were all action.

Maidana was dropped once in the first round and twice on the second. Showing his fortitude, he got back up and stopped the powerful Ortiz. The fight became a candidate for fight of the year and elevated Maidana’s popularity in the states.

Amir Khan, the UK superstar and Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner was the opponent. Las Vegas was the setting. It was an electric night on December 11th of 2010. Boxer vs. Power puncher, classic fights are made with this style match-up. Khan landed a perfect hook to the body, folding Maidana in half and forcing him to go the floor in extreme pain. The crowd thought it was over. Slowly Maidana willed himself up. The chills through the crowd could be felt for we were about to witness one of the most exciting fights in all of combat sports. Once again Maidana proved to be tough as nails and with his incredible will, forcing himself up, continuing to fight, and hurting Khan in the later rounds. It went to the scorecards and Khan was pronounced the winner. Millions got to witness greatness for both men that night.

Then on April 9th, 2011, against legendary Mexican fighter Erik Morales, another fight of the year candidate was created, both men had their moments and neither gave up ground. That night, Maidana’s hand was raised as the victor. It was time for Maidana to head back to his home country and give his fellow countrymen a championship fight on home turf. September 23rd, 2011, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the WBA World light welterweight title was on the line. “El Chino” stopped Petrov in the 4th round, making his countrymen were proud.

The future

Now with former trainer of Marco Antonio Barrera, Rudy Perez, who polished Barrera’s boxing, will be doing the same to Maidana. Maidana spoke with RSR while he is preparing to fight Devon Alexander in a higher weight class on Saturday on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.

MA: Would you like one day to be in movies?

No, I have no aspirations to be an actor.

MA: What led to the decision to fight at 147?

It was a fight I was offered to fight at 147. I didn’t have an opponent…so I took the offer.

MA: Your thoughts on Devon Alexander?

He is a fast opponent. We have watched lots of tape on him and we have trained accordingly and I am ready. We will see on the day of the fight who will come out victorious.

MA: Do you have any idols you look up to?

I don’t have any idols.

MA: You fight with great passion, where does the passion come from?

I give everything in the ring. I hold nothing back.

MA: Is your brother, Fabian, going to fight in the Olympics this year?

Well, he is fighting to qualify and needs to win to compete in the Olympics.

MA: You spoke about fishing. Do you find it peaceful or frustrating?

It relaxes me. I have been fishing here in Puerto Rico. Big fish, fish that in Argentina we don’t have.

MA: Do you enjoy working with Rudy Perez?

Unfortunately, he was sick and couldn’t be in this camp, but we are following the training he taught us.

MA: What is the most beautiful thing about the sport of boxing?

It’s a healthy sport. The love for your rival is even there after you have a knockout. You still respect your opponent.
